Every immigrant needs to know at least basic English before he moves to the English-speaking country. Which topics should a new immigrant know? Where to start? Let's see.
The main function of every language is communication between people. What are the areas of communication you will be involved into after arriving to the new country? Imagine your first month of immigration. Where will you go? What will you do? Who are the people you will have to talk to? Those answers will determine which vocabulary you should learn before you go.
Divide your learning into few topics such as: at home, in the shop, in the immigration service, at work, and so on. Learn the necessary vocabulary, including word expressions and whole sentence structures. Sometimes it is helpful to learn whole texts describing certain topics, for example "Visiting a Hospital" or "At the Street". Although the main learning of English will start when you will start living in an English-speaking country, you should already know basic English language grammar and sentence structures before you arrive to Canada or USA.
Some of the basic topics you should know in English before you immigrate may be as follows:
- Personal Details: knowing terminology such as "last name", "gender" and "stepmother" to fill in the forms you will receive during the immigration process;
- Basic Communication Phrases: introducing yourself, greetings, asking for directions, buying something at the shop etc;
- Autobiography; telling your story will be the biggest challenge for the first few months in your new country, everyone wants to know that. Prepare for that by learning neseccary vocabulary and sentence structures that will help you to make an impressive speech.
